United fail to beat 18th-placed West Ham
Manchester United extended their uneasy run with a second straight underwhelming result at home, following a shock 1-0 defeat to a 10-man Everton in their previous match. West Ham, who have managed just one away win all season, offered stubborn resistance. Although United enjoyed periods of pressure, Bruno Fernandes struggled to ignite the attack as Ayden Heaven looked uneasy on his first Premier League start of the season.
Amorim’s post-match mood was tense, signaling patience is running thin as he faced pointed questions from the press.
Amorim: We should have sealed the match
In a candid press conference, Amorim said: “Frustrated, angry, that’s how it feels. After the opening goal, we lost too many second balls and spent too much time defending deep. Long balls allowed them to win second balls against three of us, so the second half demanded better control. We’re being punished by the habit of conceding second balls, and sometimes it isn’t about extra bodies up front. We’re inconsistent, but if you watch the goal, we had the situation under control with a long ball; we simply need to do better. There’s a strong feeling we should be scoring more goals, and I’m confident we can.”
He also criticized the team’s drop in intensity after Dalot’s opener. “We should have closed the game out by keeping hold of the ball, because the opportunity was there. The overall performance wasn’t perfect — we had moments, but we lost our grip for a stretch in the first half and, more notably, after the goal in the second half. The game was within reach to win, and we squandered it.”
- Heaven’s benching and a quick hook Amorim surprised everyone by fielding 19-year-old Ayden Heaven from the start, replacing Leny Yoro after a wobbly display in the Crystal Palace win. Heaven, though, was withdrawn at halftime, with Yoro re-entering the fray. Heaven had already picked up an early yellow for a rash tackle on Jarrod Bowen and battled against West Ham’s Callum Wilson.
“Of course the yellow mattered,” Amorim explained. “We aimed to press high and leave a central defender marked by a striker, so any foul there would attract a yellow. We also missed Ayden on set pieces, so we need smarter execution in these moments.”
Dalot reflected on the setback: “We’re disappointed. We must control more of the game, especially at Old Trafford. We can’t get as anxious after scoring; we became sloppy with possession. We had the game in our hands, and it should have stayed that way. We anticipated West Ham would try to counter and use set plays, but perhaps we were more to blame than credit to them. We can’t drop many points if top-four or top-five is the target.”
United’s next test: bounce back against winless Wolves
With four days to reset, United head to face Wolverhampton Wanderers, who sit near the bottom with only two points this season. United have had mixed results against Wolves in recent times, including losses in both meetings last season under Amorim.
