MHRA Approves First OTC Allergy Spray for Teens 12+ | Hay Fever Relief Without Prescription (2026)

A groundbreaking decision has been made in Europe, and it's a game-changer for allergy sufferers! The MHRA has just approved an over-the-counter allergy treatment for adolescents aged 12 and above, making it more accessible than ever before. But here's where it gets controversial...

On December 15, 2025, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) took a bold step by reclassifying fluticasone propionate (Pirinase Allergy 0.05% w/w Nasal Spray). This means that from February 2026, pharmacists will be able to sell this intranasal corticosteroid to adolescents aged 12 and over without a prescription. A significant move, as currently, intranasal corticosteroids are only available over the counter for adults aged 18 and above.

Fluticasone propionate is a powerful tool in the fight against allergic rhinitis, including hay fever and other airborne allergies. It helps alleviate symptoms such as a stuffy nose, sneezing, runny or itchy nose, watery eyes, and sinus discomfort. With this new approval, the MHRA aims to ensure patient safety and provide easier access to effective allergy treatments.

The decision was based on the advice of the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM), an independent scientific advisory body to the government. After reviewing the evidence, CHM concluded that the medicine could be safely supplied to adolescents aged 12 and over under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Dr. Ravina Barrett, the Self Medication and Reclassification Team Lead at the MHRA, emphasized the importance of patient safety and access to high-quality medicines. She highlighted that corticosteroid nasal sprays offer fast and effective relief to those suffering from airborne allergies, including hay fever.

With this pharmacy-only availability, parents and carers can now obtain treatment for adolescents without the need for a doctor's prescription. This not only reduces the burden on GP appointments but also aligns with the NHS Long Term Plan, which aims to deliver more care in the community and improve patient access.

Dr. Gary Stiefel, chair of the Allergy UK Health Advisory Board and a consultant in paediatric allergy, praised the safety and effectiveness of fluticasone propionate 0.05% nasal spray. He stated that its use in children aged 12 and above will greatly benefit a large number of hay fever sufferers. However, he also stressed the importance of ensuring young people are shown how to use the device correctly.

A full list of side effects can be found in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) or the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC). It's important to note that the product should not be used continuously for more than three months. If longer-term use is required, patients are advised to consult their doctor.

The MHRA will continue to monitor the safety and effectiveness of Pirinase Allergy 0.05% w/w Nasal Spray, as they do with all medicines. Anyone experiencing suspected side effects is encouraged to report them through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, available online or via the Yellow Card app.

This decision by the MHRA opens up new possibilities for allergy management and empowers individuals to take control of their health. It's a step towards a more accessible and patient-centric healthcare system.

And this is the part most people miss... This reclassification is not just about convenience; it's about empowering adolescents and their families to manage allergies effectively. It's a small but significant step towards a healthier and more allergy-aware society.

What are your thoughts on this new development? Do you think it will make a difference in the lives of allergy sufferers? We'd love to hear your opinions and experiences in the comments below!
