Manchester United fans, rejoice! Lisandro Martínez is on the cusp of a return, injecting a much-needed boost into the Red Devils' defense. After a lengthy absence due to an ACL injury sustained back on February 2nd, the Argentine defender is nearing his comeback. But here's where it gets controversial...
Ruben Amorim, the team's manager, has confirmed Martínez is nearing match fitness, which is welcome news for a side that conceded 18 goals in their first 11 Premier League matches last season. Martínez's return is expected to significantly bolster a defense that sorely missed his presence. His absence was particularly felt as Man Utd finished a club-worst 15th last season.
The anticipation surrounding Martínez's return was heightened when he was called up to the Argentina squad for the November internationals. Training with his national team seems to have paid off, as he's now close to his first appearance in over nine months. Amorim stated, "I feel Licha is becoming close to being able to play," highlighting the player's progress. He also cautioned that Martínez might struggle in the initial minutes but is in a much better position than a couple of weeks ago.
But will he be deployed in midfield? That's the million-dollar question. With United's midfield sometimes looking vulnerable, there was speculation about Martínez filling a defensive midfield role. However, Amorim has seemingly ruled out this possibility, stating that while Martínez is a versatile player, that position isn't the right fit for him. He added that Martínez would need more time to work there and that he is not working there, in an emergency he can play but he is not thinking about that.
Martínez has primarily played as a center-back, with 225 appearances in that position throughout his career. He has also played 22 times as a defensive midfielder and 16 times as a left-back.
And this is the part most people miss... Other injuries in defense could further influence Martínez's role. Harry Maguire is confirmed to miss the Everton match due to a training injury.
In other news, Benjamin Šeško is expected to be out for a few weeks due to a knee injury. His return timeline is estimated to be between three to five weeks. This means he's likely to return around the same time as Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo depart for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Here's a look at the games Šeško could miss:
- Everton - Monday, Nov. 24 - Premier League
- Crystal Palace - Sunday, Nov. 30 - Premier League
- West Ham - Thursday, Dec. 4 - Premier League
- Wolves - Monday, Dec. 8 - Premier League
