Kenya Navy marks 61 years of service in a spirited celebration at Mtongwe
The Kenya Navy marked its 61st anniversary with a lively ceremony at Lieutenant Colonel Kimaro Stadium, located at the Kenya Navy Base in Mtongwe, Mombasa County. Known locally as ‘Kenya Navy Day,’ the event was led by Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, and brought together naval personnel and their families to celebrate pride, unity, and shared purpose.
Kenya Navy Day is observed annually on 14 December to commemorate the Navy’s establishment as a formal service within the Kenya Defence Forces. The occasion also offers a moment to reflect on the Navy’s accomplishments over the past year and to acknowledge the people who support its mission.
A standout aspect of the celebrations was recognizing the sacrifices and steadfast support of Kenya Navy families during deployments. In a gesture of appreciation, families enjoyed sea rides aboard Kenya Navy Ships (KNS) JASIRI and SHUPAVU, giving them a firsthand glimpse of the operational environment where their loved ones serve.
The Navy also hosted activities designed to promote fitness, teamwork, and cohesion. A swimming competition fostered camaraderie and a strong sense of esprit de corps among participants.
Families and children enjoyed a wide array of recreational options at the stadium, including bouncing castles, chess, tug-of-war, and other games. A communal luncheon, complemented by live entertainment, enhanced the festive mood and strengthened the bonds between service members and their families. Prize awards were given for the games, and children received Christmas gifts.
In addressing the gathering, Major General Otieno expressed deep gratitude to the families for their unwavering support and highlighted their essential role in enabling the Kenya Navy to fulfill its mission.
‘To everyone present, thank you for making this day meaningful. Enjoy the celebrations, cherish time with your families, and continue to uphold the spirit of togetherness that defines the Kenya Navy,’ he said.
Leading up to the main event, the Kenya Navy carried out a series of activities emphasizing environmental stewardship and community engagement, including tree planting, a beach cleanup, and a 30-kilometer walk across Mombasa County. These efforts underscored the service’s commitment to conservation and public involvement.
