Get ready for a thrilling homecoming! Three brave space explorers are about to conclude their extraordinary journey aboard the International Space Station (ISS). NASA astronaut Jonny Kim, alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, are gearing up for their return to Earth aboard the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft. But here's where it gets even more fascinating: this mission marks the first spaceflight for both Kim and Zubritsky, while Ryzhikov wraps up his third long-duration stay on the ISS. And this is the part most people miss: by the time they land, they'll have circled our planet a staggering 3,920 times and traveled nearly 104 million miles—all in just 245 days!
The crew's departure is scheduled for 12:41 p.m. AEDT on Tuesday, December 9, when they'll undock from the station’s Prichal module. Their journey back to solid ground will culminate in a parachute-assisted landing at 4:04 p.m. AEDT the same day (10:04 a.m. local time in Kazakhstan), touching down on the vast Kazakh steppe southeast of Dzhezkazgan. Before they leave, however, a change of command ceremony will take place at 2:30 a.m. AEDT on Monday, December 8, where Ryzhikov will pass the leadership baton to NASA astronaut Mike Fincke for Expedition 74.
